Winter Container Gardening for Raleigh Landscaping
If you think you have to put away your containers for the winter, think again! Don’t put them away yet! There are plenty of plants you can use for winter containers that will provide a beautiful addition to your home and its Raleigh landscaping.
First, you will want to make sure you have a good sturdy container. Decide on the best shape and size container that will fit in the Raleigh landscaping area(s) you want to place them. You also want the best size for your plants and its roots. For the plant, you want a container that is neither too big, nor too small. The size container will also need to depend on the plants you use.
Next, you want to ensure the container has good drainage. You don’t want the plants to sit in pools of water as this will lead to plant disease or fungi. You can use a coffee filter to cover the hole in the bottom of pots with a big hole. This will allow for water to run through, but will keep the soil in. You can also you window screening for the same effect. If the container does not have a way for water to drain out, you will want to drill at least one good sized hole in the bottom.
Once you have a good container you will need to choose a good soil mixture. You will want the mixture to be best suited to the plants. So, this will depend on the various plants you choose. You may choose to mix plant food in with the soil. This is a good option. Keep in mind, you will still need to replenish the plant’s food periodically. This will depend on what food you use and the plant’s needs.
NOTE: Watering the plants you choose will depend on the plant and its needs. A good rule of thumb, however, is to stick your finger in the soil. If the top 2 inches is dry, the plant needs to be watered. Water thoroughly.
Next, choose the plants to fill your containers and plant them! You can choose warm, colorful combinations, and place in a sunny location to bring brightness to your landscape. A mixture of silver plants also suggests winter. Get creative!
